Learning Mentors

What do learning mentors do?

Learning mentors work with young people helping to remove / overcome barriers to learning. These barriers may include self esteem, confidence, behaviour, organisation, time management, friendship issues etc.

The mentors run some group work sessions throughout the year on themes such as raising achievement, study skills, exam preparation and building social skills.

Whitley Bay High School has two learning mentors:

Jen Barton & Marni Thomas.

They both work with Years 9, 10 & 11

Mentors work with young people on a 1:1 basis on specific issues for 6 weeks.

Learning mentors also run some lunchtime groups for young people and provide a lunch time
drop in service on a Monday and a Friday between 12.30 & 1.30pm which is open to any student
in Years 9, 10 and 11 (they do not have to be working with a mentor already).

Working with a learning mentor is specific support put in place to help young people achieve
the bext they can. It is NOT a punishment OR a reward.
