Whitley Bay High School wins national prize!

Young legal eagles pick up prestigious law prize.

Whitley Bay High School students have beaten off tough competition to take the first prize in a top national law contest.

A team of 13 sixth-formers from Whitley Bay High School won the final of this year’s Bar National Mock Trial Competition, run by the Citizenship Foundation and Bar Council. The finals were held in Liverpool on Saturday March 1st.

The competition is designed to get young people aged  16-18 interested and involved in the criminal justice system, and is overseen by serving judges, QCs and practicing barristers. This year’s final saw Sixth formers from 160 schools across the county pit their wits against each other in a real-life courtroom settings.

The Whitley Bay High School team won seven grueling rounds, four at the regional final at Newcastle Crown Court in November and three in the national finals.

Led by student ‘barristers’ Rachel Clement and Craig Newbold, the team had to prosecute and defend two cases in front of His Honor Justice Clifton, HHJ Harris QC, Herbet Kerrigan QC and HHJ Roddy, who praised them for their professional performance and individual style.

The students were assisted by local barrister Xanthe Craddock from New Trinity Chambers, who also supported them at the regional final.

English teacher Kim Smith and Deputy Head Teacher Mrs Rachel Mays, who prepared the team for the competition, said: “This is a fabulous result for those involved, and the school as a whole. It’s the product of teamwork of the very highest caliber and the students have great dedication and enthusiasm, devoting hours of their own time. The overall standard of all teams competing was exceptionally high, so to win is an outstanding achievement.”

The project was also supported by Alan Campbell MP, who had lunch with the students on Friday 14th March and heard about their experiences and celebrate their success.

The winning team also took away a trophy, certificates, tokens and £500 worth of resources for their school.

Year 11 St James' Park visit.

As part of our Raising Achievement strategy, Year 11 students attended a day of events at St James’ Park designed to focus their attentions on the impending GCSE exams.
Students were treated to a session with a motivational speaker and “In it to win it” activities, based around a casino theme, to illustrate how efforts made now will pay off in the long term.
The students also underwent mock job interviews with a range of real employers with one applicant per employer being “offered the job”. All students received feedback which will prove useful for future applications.

Kenya Acorn Project

Kenya Acorn Project (KAP) is a small charity that is running a hospital and supporting several schools in the south east of Kenya. Apart from that, KAP is involved in community health and a Training and Resource Center.

KAP is registered as charity in the UK and an NGO (Non governmental organization) in Kenya. It is mainly funded by private donations.

The students at Whitley Bay High School are working hard to raise money for the project. We have many links to people in Kenya and are building friendships over there.

We have raised £3,000 so far so we are doing very well!

Please look at the KAP website at www.kenyaacornproject.org
