Year 10
Having worked with this year group throughout Year 9, we already know what a talented, interesting and individual group of young people they are. Our aim this year is to build on the relationships, confidence and sense of belonging established during their first year at Whitley Bay High School.
Our work is guided by a simple principle: every student’s story matters. We want students to attend well, participate fully and make progress, not only in their lessons, but also through the friendships, activities, responsibilities and experiences that form part of school life.
Year 10 will bring increasing academic challenge, but it should also be a year of opportunity. Students will begin to think more seriously about their future pathways, prepare for work experience and develop the independence and resilience they will need during Key Stage 4 and beyond.
The Year 10 team works closely with students, families, tutors, teachers and the wider pastoral team. We place great importance on positive relationships and early support. When a student is beginning to struggle, whether with attendance, learning, wellbeing or life beyond school, we want to identify this quickly and work constructively with the student and their family.
We look forward to helping every member of Year 10 make the most of the year ahead.
Meet the Year 10 Team
Jonathan leads the Year 10 pastoral team and has overall responsibility for the progress, attendance, wellbeing and personal development of the year group.
Andrew has particular responsibility for supporting students eligible for Pupil Premium, as well as promoting excellent attendance and punctuality across the year group.
Sarah has particular responsibility for supporting gifted and talented students and students with special educational needs and disabilities.
Ami has particular responsibility for uniform and for supporting students with special educational needs and disabilities.
Form tutors are an important and consistent point of contact for students. They see their form regularly, celebrate successes, monitor attendance and wellbeing, deliver key aspects of Personal Development and help students respond positively when difficulties arise.
Personal Development
In Year 10, students explore age appropriate themes through Personal Development lessons, tutor time, assemblies, careers education and wider enrichment opportunities. These include relationships and wellbeing, online life, personal safety, equality and diversity, financial awareness, careers, employability and preparation for adult life.
The programme complements students’ academic education and helps them become thoughtful, articulate and responsible young adults.

Celebrating Year 10
Students may receive postcards home, certificates, recognition in assemblies and other year group rewards. We will also use this page to share selected highlights from the year and celebrate the many ways in which Year 10 students contribute to our school community.
